At the end of the year, people generally decide to take a holiday and tend to travel to different places in the hope of attaining some rest and relaxation. The “festive season” however, often draws one towards many Haraam attractions. Here, one very easily falls victim to the promptings of Nafs and Shaytaan and can become engulfed in Haraam activities and sin. As such, one has to be extra vigilant and take extreme caution against heedlessness and breaking the Laws (Ahkaam) of ALLAH Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala.
Although traveling in search of rest and relaxation seems to be the norm at the end of the year, the reality is that for our whole existence in Dunya, we are travellers – moving towards the Aakhirah – towards Jannah, our origin and final abode. Essentially we are returning to ALLAH (Rujoo’ ilALLAH).
We have not been created except for the Worship of ALLAH Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala. It is very important that during the season of fitnah, we do not lose focus of our purpose in this world. Our gaze and Qiblah should be focused on our Beloved ALLAH Rabbul Izzat. At a time where people are ushering in the new year with frivolous partying, reveling and fireworks, we should suppress our nafs and seek the company (Suhbat) of the pious slaves of ALLAH. Keeping the company of the pious not only protects from engaging in sin and disobedience, but also facilitates the journey to Jannah, through the Mercy of ALLAH Ta’ala.
May ALLAH TA’ALA protect our Imaan at all times, especially during this period of vacation.

And when one of them is given good tidings of that which he attributes to the Most Merciful in comparison (ie: he is given the news of the birth of a daughter), his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief. ~ Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:17
In Islam, daughters are undoubtedly a great blessing from Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala and a means of entry into Jannah for parents who raise them with the correct Tarbiyah (upbringing in the obedience of Allah Ta’ala).
In the verse mentioned, Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala, refers to the period of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era), when a father would deem it below his dignity if his wife bore a female child. The birth of a daughter had been a source of anger and an embarrassment to fathers, to the extent that they would bury their innocent daughters alive.
Allah Taala mentions:
To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; He creates what he wills. He bestows to whom He wills female (children), and He bestows to whom He wills males.
Or He makes them [both] males and females, and He renders whom He wills barren. Indeed, He is full of Knowledge and Power. Surah Ash-Shooraa 42: 49/50
Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala, the Creator and Owner of every single creation, through His Hikmah (wisdom) and Qudrat (power), bestows offspring to whomsoever He Desires. Some are blessed with daughters, others with sons, yet some are granted none (childless). (Those that are not favoured with the boon of being granted offspring should be content with the Divine decree of Allah Ta’ala.)
Scholars have highlighted the fact that in the above verses, mention was made of ‘daughters‘ first, thus showing to us the significance of having daughters.
The Ahadeeth of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam are replete with great blessings mentioned for the one who is granted a daughter. Hence, in Islam daughters are regarded a great N’imat (bounty) and NOT considered a misfortune.
Hazrat Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri Radiallahu Anhu has narrated that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said :
لاَ يَكُونُ لأَحَدِكُمْ ثَلاَثُ بَنَاتٍ أَوْ ثَلاَثُ أَخَوَاتٍ فَيُحْسِنُ إِلَيْهِنَّ إِلاَّ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ
“If anyone cares for (his) three daughters, inculcates in them good manners, gets them married, and is kind to them, then for him is Paradise.” [Tirmidhi]
Daughters are a blessing and not a misfortune! Take delight on the birth of a daughter!

O you who have believed, do not follow the footsteps of Satan. And whosoever follows the footsteps of Shaytaan (Satan), then, verily he commands Al-Fahsha’ [i.e. to commit indecency (illegal sexual intercourse, etc.)], and Al-Munkar [disbelief and polytheism (i.e. to do evil and wicked deeds; to speak or to do what is forbidden in Islam, etc.)] ~ Surah Noor 24:21
Close friends, that Day, will be enemies to each other, except for the righteous ~ Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:67
And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, “Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way (straight path) ~ Surah Al-Furqaan 25:27
. . .
Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala and Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam have warned us not to adopt the company of wicked and evil friends. Friends who have a negative impact on one’s life, easily mislead one by taking one away from the obedience of Allah Ta’ala. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam has therefore strongly advised us of the importance of choosing good company.
He (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, “A person is likely to follow the faith of his friend, so you should look at whom you befriend.” [Tirmidhi]
Choosing to befriend righteous and virtuous Muslims is therefore a necessary means for staying on Siraatul Mustaqeem (the straight path).
. . .
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam was asked, “Which person should we adopt as a friend?” He (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) replied: “One whose appearance reminds you of Allah, and whose speech increases you in knowledge, and whose actions remind you of the hereafter.”
One begins to adopt the style and behaviour of his friends. So, before you choose a friend, enquire about his Akhlaaq (morals and character) analyse his habits, look into his way of life … does he frequent good environments, is he Allah fearing, is he pious company?
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam best described the difference between the good companion and the bad companion when he said,
“The example of a good companion and a bad one, is like that of the seller of musk and the blacksmith (respectively). As for the seller of the musk, he would either grant you some, or you may purchase it from him, or (at least) you would enjoy a pleasant fragrance from him. As for the blacksmith, then either he will burn your clothes or you would get an offensive smell from him.” [Sahih al-Bukhari]
By befriending a perfume-seller, one will unquestionably benefit by being enveloped in the sweet smells emanating in his company. Even, if one is not purchasing the perfume, merely standing in his shop, will be advantageous to the person when the effects of the fragrant smell stick to his clothing. Like that is the company of a good person.
The parable of evil company is likened to a blacksmith, who is labouring away in his workshop, filled with unpleasant stenchy smoke. The effects of the foul odour and black fumes cling onto a persons clothes, blackening them. Like that is the company of an evil person.
Choose your friends wisely!… Are they bearers of beautiful fragrances or dark clouds of toxic fumes? … They could become the reason for our entering into Jannah or Jahannam?

Husne Dhan Billah ~ Having Good Expectations of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala
A Mu’min (Believer) has to always harbour good thoughts of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. Allah has bestowed upon us countless of bounties in the past and present and He continues to favour us, so we should not be pessimistic regarding our future, lest we are considered ungrateful. When a Believer places His trust in Allah, hoping and anticipating good, then Allah Ta’ala in return does good to Him.
Allah Ta’ala says in the Noble Quraan :
وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُ مَخْرَجًا • وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ ۚ وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُ
And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him. Surah At-Taalaq (65:2/3)
When a person does not have good thoughts regarding Allah Ta’ala he will not be able to engender the type of love he ought to have for Allah Ta’ala. When this love is not found, then a person slowly drifts away from Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala and he becomes overpowered by Shaytaan and succumbs to sins.
Shaytaan will continuously play back the reels of our past and make us feel miserable, but, when a righteous believer inculcates Husne Dhan Billah (has a good expectation of Allah), then Allah Ta’ala creates unlimited avenues for him to seek His forgiveness and gain proximity to Him. Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala looks for a thousand excuses to forgive us, and never looks for a thousand excuses to punish us!
Once we have made sincere Taubah and we do not return to our past sins and try our level best to inculcate ‘Taqwa’ (Allah consciousness) in our lives and obey Allah Ta’ala and Rasulullah Sallallahu AlayhI Wa Sallam, Allah Ta’ala’s mercy will envelop us and we will InshaAllah, find ourselves in a good condition in the hereafter.
It is mentioned in a Hadith of Rasullullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, reported by Hazrat Ibn Mas’ud Radiallahu Anhu :
وعن ابن مسعود، رضي الله عنه ، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم،
“الجنة أقرب إلى أحدكم من شراك نعله، والنار مثل ذلك” (رواه البخاري)
“Jannah is nearer to you than your shoelace, and so is the (Hell) Fire” ~ Al-Bukhari
Just like how a shoelace is tied firmly and is close to a shoe, Jannah is close to us and not unattainable or a far fetched goal. One should always be hopeful and never lose sight of the promises of Allah Ta’ala (The Most Kind and Most Merciful) ) who has mentioned to us that, in the Aakhirah (in Jannah) there will be no depression and no oppression. In Surah Yaseen, Allah Ta’ala has mentioned : سَلَامٌ قَوْلًا مِّن رَّبٍّ رَّحِيمٍ Peace! – a word (of salutation) from a Lord Most Merciful! ~ [36:58], that He, Himself, will make Salaam to the Jannati’s who will be in total peace, tranquility, serenity and enjoyment.
In a similar way, Jahannum is also close to us … so to attain this friendship of Allah Ta’ala and get the enjoyment of the Aakhirah, one will have to make Mujahadah and exert a force against one’s Nafs, suppress one’s desires and resist the strong temptations of the Dunya when sins present themselves. Striving in the wrong path and expending all our energies in Haraam is not Mujahadah ON the Nafs, but that Mujahadah is for entertainment OF the Nafs. We will make mistakes and be faced with temptations, trials, pain and suffering, but these are all the hurdles of this ‘temporary life’. Having good thoughts of Allah Ta’ala, engenders the love of Allah Ta’ala in our hearts and creates this strong bond with Allah.
Rasullullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, said that Allah the Almighty said, in a Hadith Qudsi:
‘I am just as My slave thinks I am, (i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if He remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I too, remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better than they; and if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.’ “
The fact that Allah Ta’ala gives us the opportunity to obey and worship Him through Salaah, Zikrullah, Tilawat etc … is a proof of Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala’s Mercy and kindness upon us. We should always make Shukr to Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala and be grateful servants and not of those who are constantly complaining.
Therefore, inculcating Husne Dhan Billah, a hopeful attitude, together with having good thoughts of Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala is a distinguishing quality of a Mu’min, which will make the road towards Him very easy InshaAllah.

But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah ~ Surah Al Baqarah 2:165
. . .
5 Ways of Generating the Love of Allah Ta’ala into Our Hearts
1 • Abundant remembrance of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala through Zikrullah. The more a person makes the Zikr of Allah, the more HIS love increases in a persons heart.
2 • Pondering over the innumerable Ni’mats (bounties) that Allah Ta’ala has bestowed upon us.
When one contemplates over the continuous bounties Allah has showered upon him, then the response to Allah would be, that one begins to love Allah, (his BENEFACTOR ) more and more …
3 • Keeping the company of the friends of Allah Ta’ala, in whose companionship, the effects of Allah Ta’ala’s Muhhabbat (love) is engendered into our hearts.
4 • Remaining in the obedience of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. The more one obeys his Beloved, the more his love increases.
5 • Making Dua to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala to instil HIS love into our heart.
Allahumma inni as-aluka hubbaka, wa hubba may-yuhibbuka, wa hubba ‘amalin yuqarribu ila hubbika
O Allah! I ask You for Your love and the love of those who love You, and for the love of every action which will bring me closer to Your love.

HARMS OF SINS
Alhamdulillah, during the blessed month of Ramadaan, most Muslims make a concerted effort to abstain from sins. This is done in order to attain the Pleasure of Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala and in the hope of reaping the innumerable promised rewards of the Mubarak month. Whilst those who exercise self-restraint and avoid sinning, experience a Noor (light) entering the heart … those who are habitual and irresolute (attached to sinning), find themselves engulfed by the darkness of sin.(May Allah Taala protect us). While many try to give up sin, some believers succeed in doing so immediately and completely, whilst others struggle and give up sinning slowly (in increments) and with difficulty.
Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas Radiyallahu Anhu (an illustrious young Sahabi of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) was once asked:
” رَجُلٌ كَثِيرُ الْعَمَلِ كَثِيرُ الذُّنُوبِ ، وَرَجُلٌ قَلِيلُ الْعَمَلِ قَلِيلُ الذُّنُوبِ ؟”
Is a man who has performed very little Nafl Ibaadah (over and above his Fardh) and engaged in very few sins, (better) than the one who has performed many good deeds and just as many sins?
Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas Radiyallahu Anhu responded > “لا أَعْدِلُ بِالسَّلامَةِ شَيْئًا “
I can never equate anything to something which is free and void of sins ie. something which is safe from sins ~ (Baihaqi)
Thus, one who engages in very little Nafl (optional) Ibaadah but is extremely cautious about engaging in sin cannot be compared to the one who is very punctual in Nafl Ibaadah, yet careless about engaging in sin. Whilst the former has earned the Pleasure of ALLAH Ta’ala through obedience and restraint, the latter has angered Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala by lack of concern and violation of major commands.
Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala has said :
“ام حَسِبَ الَّذِينَ اجْتَرَحُوا السَّيِّئَاتِ أَن نَّجْعَلَهُمْ كَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ أَمْ سَوَاءً مَّحْيَاهُمْ وَمَمَاتُهُمْ ۚ .سَاءَ مَا يَحْكُمُونَ
Or do those who commit evils think We will make them like those who have believed and done righteous deeds – [make them] equal in their life and their death? Evil is that which they judge ~ Surah Al-Jathiyah 45:21
Although we are all living in the same Dunya (world) and travelling toward the same Aakhirah (Hereafter) – those who perpetrate sins are not equal to those who believe and engage in righteous deeds. The life and death of an evil sinner is not the same as the life and death of a righteous believer; nor will it ever be!
SINS ARE LIKENED TO THE EFFECTS OF POISON IN THE BODY
Allamah Ibnul Qayyim Rahmatullahi Alayh said:
أن المعاصي تُضعف القلب
“Innal ma’aasi thudh-‘iful quloob”
Sins weaken the heart.
When a person becomes defiant and persists in perpetrating sins, then that person’s desire for disobedience increases, the desire to repent decreases and is eventually removed from the heart completely. Sins weaken the heart and extract from a person the Iraadah of Taubah (intention of repenting). A time comes when his heart is so corroded and engulfed with sins, that the will and resolve of the heart is weakened, to the extent that the desire of turning to Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala never enters a person. In reality, his heart becomes incapacitated and a Hijaab (veil), is put between him and Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala. Thus, he becomes deprived of worshiping Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala and is far removed from the Mercy and forgiveness of ALLAH. (May Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala protect us all)
Scholars have thus written that the effect of sins upon the heart is like that of poison upon the body. Just as poison kills a person, sins kill the heart. When a person knows the harmful effects of a lethal poison he is very unlikely to consume it. Similarly, if one understands the extremely harmful effects of sins, one can make a sincere effort to refrain from engaging in them.
BE IT A KABEERAH (BIG) SIN OR A SAGHEERAH (SMALL) SIN
Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas’ud Radiyallahu Anhu reported that Rasullulah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: “Beware of minor sins. Verily, they pile upon a man until he is destroyed.”~ (Musnad Ahmad)
A Mu’min (believer) should never look at how small or great a sin is. Rather, he should look at the Greatness and Might of the One whom he is disobeying … Almighty ALLAH!
Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas Radiyallahu Anhu had also mentioned : “Oh sinner! Do not feel safe from the evil consequence of sins”~(Al Hilya)
Many a times we feel that it is just a “minor” sin. Ulema and Scholars have after categorizing major and minor sins, clearly mentioned :
“لا تنظر إلى صغر المعصية، ولكن انظر إلى عظمة من عصيت”
Do not look at how small your sin may be, but consider the Greatness of the One you are disobeying. ~ Al-Baihaqee’s ‘Shu’abul Eemaan’ (5/430
At the time of transgressing the commands of Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala, if a person’s heart does not tremble out of the fear of Allah (who is constantly watching him), nor does he feel even a minute amount of shyness for the angels (who are witnessing the transgression), then that which comes along with the sin is greater (in evil) than the sin itself.
At the time of indulging in sin, a person is sometimes so caught up that he forgets that Allah sees him. In his deluded state, he feels some type of achievement or accomplishment as a result of having engaged in the sin. His ecstacy at being able to commit a certain sin blinds him to the consequences and his potential outcome on the day of Qiyamah! We are all aware that sins are punishable but are somehow so deluded and relaxed about it, that we think nothing is going to happen!
In more extreme cases, a person sometimes becomes sad when the opportunity of committing a sin is lost! He exhibits remorse at missing the prospect of disobeying Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala! Further, when he is committing the sin, the type of fear that overcomes him is not fear for Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala, but fear that people might catch him red-handed! Verily one has to be a servant and slave of only Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala and not anyone or anything else.
When indulging in sin, such a person’s heart is enveloped in Qillatul Haya (having very little modesty) and it is not disturbed by his forgetfulness of Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala. The person is unmoved by his forgetfulness of the ONE Who created him – the ONE who provides for, nourishes, sustains, cares for and helps him. Such a person is blinded to the innumerable bounties from Allah Ta’ala and steeped in His disobedience. Certainly, this is not the character of a Mu’mim!
Hadhrat Wahab Radiyallahu Anhu narrates in a Hadith-e-Qudsi that ALLAH Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala said to Bani Israeel :
” اني اذا اطعت رضيت واذا رضيت باركت وليس لبركتي نهاية واني اذا عصيت غضبت واذا غضبت لعنت ولعنتي تبلغ السابع من الولد.”
“O my Bandah (Servants)! When I am Obeyed, I become pleased; when I become pleased I grant Barakah. When I am disobeyed, I become Wrathful and I curse (the disobedient ones). The effect of My La’nat (Curse) extends to seven generations.”~ (Ahmad)
A person who is sinful and who habitually disobeys Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, will thus suffer a life of wretchedness and misery. Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala is MOST Merciful and continuously overlooks sins and gives us countless opportunities to make amends; but when a person persists in sin, then Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala becomes SO Angry that He curses! … And the curse of AllahSubhaanahu Wa Ta’ala is so severe, that it extends for several generations!
THE ABOUNDING MERCY OF ALLAH SUBHAANAHU WA TA’ALA DESPITE OUR DISOBEDIENCE
No matter how much and how great our sins may seem, the vast and abounding Mercy of Allah knows no limits.
A bedouin once entered the Musjid of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. When the Salaah terminated, he cried out from behind the Sahabah (RA):
“اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْنِي وَمُحَمَّدًا وَلاَ تَرْحَمْ مَعَنَا احدا”
Allahummar Hamni Wa Muhammada Wa la Tarham Ma’ana ahada : Oh Allah! Have mercy on me and on Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) and do not have mercy on anyone else
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam turned towards him and said: >” لَقَدِ احْتَظَرْتَ وَاسِعًا”
“You have narrowed (constricted) something that is vast” ie : the Mercy of Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala.
Rasullulah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam further explained that Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala has divided His Mercy into one hundred parts, of which He retained ninety-nine parts and sent down only one part to earth.
Through the one percent of Mercy that Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala has sent down in the world, every living being (mankind, Jinn, animals and insects) all display Muhabbah (mutual love, compassion and kindness for one another), and through it, even wild animals care for their young. Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala has held back the remaining ninety-nine percent of His Mercy for His slaves on the day of Qiyamah! There is no doubt, that the Mercy of Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala is vast and Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala will definitely forgive us, provided we sincerely seek His forgiveness.
TURNING TO ALLAH SUBHAANAHU WA TA’ALA WITH TAUBAH AND ISTIGHFAAR ERASES SINS
In another Hadith narrated by Hazrat Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu, RasulullahSallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said :
“Every one of my followers will be forgiven except those who expose (openly) their wrongdoings. An example of this is that of a man who commits a sin at night which Allah has covered for him, and in the morning, he would say (to people) “I committed such and such sin last night,” while Allah had kept it a secret. During the night Allah had covered it up, but in the morning this sinner tears up the ‘cover’ provided by Allah, himself.” ~ Al-Bukhari
Regrettably, we have become very brazen and bold in committing sins openly! When a person indulges in sins, he does not realise the numerous harms and misfortune those sins generate.
Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala, out of His Infinite Grace, Kindness and Mercy, conceals and hides the sins of the Mujaahiroon (those bold sinners who commit sinful acts privately and then announce them shamelessly). Nobody had seen him committing a sin, but this foolish person, goes out in the morning and tears the veil placed by Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala concealing the sin from the eyes of the public and society. Essentially, the person ‘brags’ about the very sin which Allah Ta’ala had concealed for him at night.
When the heart has reached such a low state, then it eventually becomes diseased and weakened and the person will see ‘falsehood as truth’ and ‘truth as falsehood’. Due to his diseased heart he will find flaws in the Hadith and Sunnah, and will be blinded to the sublime way of life of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. The heart actually experiences a change called Khasful Qalb: It sinks lower and lower and becomes debased causing a person to bask in sins. The person will be constantly engaged in clubbing, drinking alchohol, womanizing, gambling and viewing pornography. Sins will manifest in every limb of his body and he will take pleasure remaining immersed in a filthy and immoral life.
When this connection with Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala is broken through engaging in a multitude of sins, then a person is overcome with the reality of Wahsha (estrangement): when one feels forlorn and wretched and that special contact with Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala is completely lost. Because he has forgotten Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala, in turn, Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala ignores him. When the soul goes down this dark path, there is no comfort or enjoyment in life, nor enjoyment in one’s Ibaadah.
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala mentioned (in the Quran) :
نَسُوا اللَّهَ فَنَسِيَهُمْ
They have forgotten Allah, so He hath forgotten them (ignored them) ~ Surah Taubah 9:67
A person who saved himself from sins in this world deeming nothing to be minor – but rather – out of worry and concern, imagined all sins as major, will earn the Mercy of Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala on the day of Qiyamah. On the opposite end of the spectrum, one who is a Faasiq/Faajir (open sinner) and thinks nothing of his sins (major or minor) faces destruction on the Day of Qiyamah. The former is like one who sees every sin as a huge mountain hovering over his head, threatening to crush him, whilst the latter sees every sin as a harmless, minuscule insect which can bring no harm. Foolish indeed is the Faasiq!
Whilst sins are dangerous and lead to destruction, in many instances, the person may have fallen into sin due to misguidance, error, or negligence. Thus it is not appropriate to look down upon a sinner with pride and contempt. One should make abundant Shukr to Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala for protection from falling into that sin and also for concealing whatever sins one has committed!
One can always escape the shackles of sins and be free through sincere repentance. The doors of Taubah are widely open to any person who turns to Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala, till before he leaves this world. It is open right until the soul reaches the throat (at the time of death). The Mercy of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala is not restricted, and nobody should despair of receiving it. Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala will accept the Taubah of every person provided that it is sincere. However great the sin is, it is not greater than the Mercy of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala!
10 POINT SUMMARY
1 – Abstaining from sin brings Noor in the heart, whereas habitually engaging in sin steeps ones heart in darkness.
2- Engaging in sins increasing the propensity for sinning and decreasing the propensity for repentance – sins are therefore like a poison which kills the heart.
3- Do not be careless about minor sins for they pile up quickly and lead to destruction.
4- Do not look at whether a sin is minor or major but rather look at the Greatness and Might of the ONE Who is being disobeyed: ALLAH Subhaanahu WA Ta’ala
5- The anger and curse of ALLAH Ta’ala upon the shameless habitual sinner may affect generations to come.
6- ALLAH Ta’ala is Most Merciful and loves to forgive the sinner who turns to HIM in sincere repentance.
7- The Mercy of ALLAH Ta’ala is infinitely vast – and of all HIS Mercy only 1% has reached the Earth and 99% is reserved for the Aakhira.
8 – Persistence in sins causes a veil to be drawn over the heart preventing one from repentance, forgiveness, enjoyment in life.
9- It is inappropriate to look down upon a sinner – it is best to make Shukr for being saved from such sins.
10- The doors of Taubah are always open right till mauth and ALLAH Subhaanahu WA Ta’ala accepts the sincere repentance of every person who turns to HIM. No matter how great the sin, the MERCY of ALLAH is undoubtedly far Greater.

Comments Off on A Step Towards Performing Tahajjud Salaah
A common problem that arises during the Summer months, is regarding ‘Tahajjud Salaah’. One has the intention to wake up for Tahajjud, but because Fajr is quite early and Esha is late, many miss Tahajjud Salaah and then feel spiritually low …
Hazrat Dr Abdul Hay Rahmatullah Alayh (Khalifa of Hazrat Thanwi Rahmatullah Alayh) mentioned : The ‘ilaaj (remedy) for a person who is finding it difficult to wake up for Tahajjud Salaah is that when one does happen to awaken at night, but feels very tired and feels lazy to perform his Tahajjud, then at least he should sit up on his bed and make Istighfaar at least three times.
There is a Hadith of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam (narrated by Hazrat Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu) that mentions:
Our Lord who is blessed and exalted descends every night to the lowest heaven. When the last one-third of the night remains, He says: Who supplicated Me so that I may answer him? Who asks of Me so that I may give to him? Who asks My forgiveness so that I may forgive him? ~[Sunan Abi Dawud]
Hence, one needs to just say,
“Allah-hummagh-firli”- “Allah-hummagh-firli”- “Allah-hummagh-firli” …. Oh Allah, Forgive me! …. Oh Allah, Forgive me! …. Oh Allah, Forgive me!
The caller may proclaim, but if man is unconcerned and asks for nothing then what kind of attitude is this. So, at that time, at least one should say :
“Allah-hummagh-firli” …. Oh Allah, Forgive me!”
When a person does one good deed, then Allah Ta’ala will give him the Taufeeq of doing another good deed. Therefore, when a person makes Dua in this manner (“Allah-hummagh-firli”), then Allah Ta’ala will give him the Taufeeq of reading a few rakaats of Salaah. One should say to oneself, “I have at least awoken, now let me go and relieve myself”… After relieving yourself, tell yourself that you are awake now and let me make Whudu (ablution) … After that, you will Insha`Allah get the Taufeeq of reading at least 2 Rakaats of Tahajjud Salaah. So this is the benefit of at least saying : “Allah-hummagh-firli” …. Oh Allah, Forgive me! … It serves as an invitation to reading Tahajjud Salaah.
• Even if you do not get the Taufeeq of reading the Tahajjud Salaah at that time, at least your Dua will be heard…..as it is a time of acceptance of Duas.
• Besides Istighfaar, whatever other Dua you desire to make, should be made.
Hazrat Thanwi Rahmatullah Alayh has advised, that a person could read his Tahajjud when performing the 2 Rakaats Nafl of Esha Salaah (before the Witr Salaah). One could make the intention of Tahajjud Salaah then. Insha Allah you will be recorded amongst those who have performed the Tahajjud Salaah, even though one does not wake up in the late part of the night. A misconception that we have, is that Tahajjud will only be accepted if you sleep and wake up … Yes, the ‘ideal’ is when a person sleeps and then wakes up in the latter part of the night … BUT we are so weak, so instead of losing the whole Sawaab (reward) altogether, at least get the Sawaab of Tahajjud Salaah by reading your 2 Rakaats Tahajjud with your Esha Salaah. This much, you have secured, your Sawaab (reward) for Tahajjud Salaah by reading it after the Fard of Esha Salaah and before the Witr.
However one should not become altogether complacent and not make an effort to wake up for Tahajjud Salaah. If Allah grants a person Taufeeq to arise again, in the last part of the night, then one can perform a further Rakaats of Salaah.
This method is not baseless …
A Hadith of Rasullulah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam mentions : Hazrat Iyas ibn Mu’awiya Al Muzani Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasullulah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “Be sure to offer Tahajjud Salah though it may be as short as a goats milking. Any Salah offered after ‘Isha will indeed be counted as Tahajjud. (Tabarani)
~ Therefore, even if it may be a few short minutes of prayer (likened to the short time taken to milk a goat), but do offer some Tahajjud Salaah, even if it may be during the Esha Salaah.
Insha`Allah, Allah Ta’ala will give you the full reward.
Allah Ta’ala says :
“[The believers are those] whose sides remain away from their beds, while they call on their Lord with fear and hope.” ~ Surah Sajda 32:16
Hadhrat Mu’az bin Jabal Radiallahu Anhu relates, “Once I was on a journey with Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam. One morning, at the time of Fajr, I asked, ‘O Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam, Do show me such an action that will grant me admission into Jannah.’ Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam replied, ‘You have inquired about an extremely difficult affair, nevertheless it becomes easy for those whom Allah makes it easy. Worship Allah without ascribing any partners to Him, establish Salaah, observe the fast in the month of Ramadhaan, and perform Hajj of the Baitullah. Fasting is a shield, while charity extinguishes the fire of sin and so does a person’s Salaah in the darkness of the night.’ Thereafter Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam recited the above ayah.” ~ Ma’ariful Quraan vol.7
This Hadith highlights deeds that take one to Jannah. After enumerating all the deeds, Rasullulah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said : ‘And a little part of the night spent in the Ibadah of Allah’ …. So, stand before Allah in the darkness of the night (in Tahajjud Salaah) and submit your petition. This is one of those deeds that takes a person to Jannah …
We do lots of A’maal (good deeds) in Shariah, without realising the virtues and blessings and benefits attached to these acts of worship. Example : We make Whudu, but how many of us know the Sawaab (reward) for making Whudu? What is the benefit when performing Nafl Salaah or reciting some Masnoon Surahs?
We need to have Istihzaar (consciousness) of Fadhaail (virtues) and the blessings of the A’maal (deeds) that we are do……Why? … It will create more Shawq (yearning) in us to continue performing those good deeds. When the blessings are not in front of us, then at times we find ourselves gradually discarding it.
Hazrat Abu Umamah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasullulah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: Make it a point to observe Tahajjud prayer, for it was the practice of the pious before you (and it is the means whereby you can find) nearness to your Lord and (seek) expiation for the sins and (find) prevention from evil. (Tirmidhi)
This Hadith expounds the true quality of the sincere servants of Allah Ta’ala. They distance themselves from their beds in the darkness of night because of fear of attaining Allah’s displeasure and His chastisement while cherishing Hope of His Mercy and Rewards.
Hazrat Abu Umamah Radiyallahu Anhu narrated that Rasullulah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said : > Hold onto Tahajjud, for (1) verily it is the practice of the pious ones before you, > (2) a means of gaining closeness to your Rabb, > (3) a means of expiation of sins, > (4) a deterrent from committing sins. ~ Tirmidhi

As part of the spiritual Islaah and Tarbiyah program for the Saalik, the Mentor prescribes a daily “spiritually enriching programme”, that comprises of selected Azkaar, Tilaawat of Quraan and the Recitation of Masnoon Surahs, Duas, Tasbeehaat, Nawaafil etc.
This is termed as Ma’moolaat – or the daily spiritual course that is necessary for the Saalik to rigidly follow, in order to achieve maximum spiritual progress. Consistency is imperative.
By maintaining consistency, one will get the complete benefit of the prescribed schedule, gaining spiritual nourishment of the soul to combat ones nafs and Shaytaan and enabling one to gain proximity to Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala.

Comments Off on Training and Nurturing the Nafs like a Child
But as for he who feared the standing before his Lord and prevented the soul from evil desires, ~ Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] abode ~ Surah An- Naazi’aat 79: 40-41
The “Nafs” is like a child.
When the child is a little baby, we give it extra care and protection. We have a special baby seat that we attach to the backseat of the car. The father, whilst driving his car, has carefully fastened the toddler with the seatbelt, to its special baby seat. The father keeps on looking back and forth to see if the baby is fine and ok … Similarly, we have to keep a ‘safety belt’ on our Nafs and continuously keep on checking on it (like a child). The nafs is now restricted. It is also continuously monitored.
This baby then grows and soon outgrows the baby seat and doesn’t fit in it anymore. The little child now sits in the backseat of the car, but every now and then wants to jump over, or wishes to stick its head out of the window … until the father warns it to sit back quietly. Then, at times the father may straps up the child with the seatbelt of the back seats, when it begins to get out of control. The child now remains fastened to the backseat … Similarly the Nafs has to be fastened all the time, lest it goes out of control.
When the child misbehaves then you reprimand it. Similarly, the Nafs too needs some rebuking and reprimanding, from time to time.
And then, the child grows a bit older, but still gets out of hand at times, so you enable the ‘child lock’ on the car door and windows … so that the child does not jump around or open the door or window on its own. All this, for its safety … Similarly, one has to be constantly on guard that one’s Nafs does not ‘jump out’ of place. And one has to try to overpower all its tricks. The nafs has to be in complete control.
Like the child, the Nafs too, is being nurtured all the time …
The growing child now wants to sit in the front seat, next to the father. The father allows it but commands the child to fasten its seatbelt. Similarly, the Nafs, like the child, gets continuous and constant training.
Every child is very precious to its parent … Will any parent throw his child out of the car if it misbehaves? No! Never! … We love our child and take care of it… We nurture this growing child to the best of our ability… Our gaze is always on the child … precious … We continously monitor the child.
After a while the child gets its driving licence and wants to sit in the drivers seat…..and drive the car. The father agrees but still reminds the grown up child to again put its seatbelt on before driving … and to drive carefully. … The seatbelt remains fastened… Similarly, the Nafs, over a period of time is being nurtured and gains spiritual strength and nourishment through making Zikr, Tilaawat of Quraan, Salaah, Taubah and Istighfaar, Ibaadat etc. It is protected from any Haraam nourishment … We don’t let it see Haraam … We don’t let it eat Haraam … We don’t let it drink Haraam …We are very cautious … We restrain it from all evil temptations.
The Nafs is like our child .. and requires its gradual nurturing …
