Daughters are a Blessing

And when one of them is given good tidings of that which he attributes to the Most Merciful in comparison (ie: he is given the news of the birth of a daughter), his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief. ~ Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:17

In Islam, daughters are undoubtedly a great blessing from Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala and a means of entry into Jannah for parents who raise them with the correct Tarbiyah (upbringing in the obedience of Allah Ta’ala).

In the verse mentioned, Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala, refers to the period of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era), when a father would deem it below his dignity if his wife bore a female child. The birth of a daughter had been a source of anger and an embarrassment to fathers, to the extent that they would  bury their innocent daughters alive.

Allah Taala mentions:

To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth; He creates what he wills. He bestows to whom He wills female (children), and He bestows to whom He wills males.

Or He makes them [both] males and females, and He renders whom He wills barren. Indeed, He is full of Knowledge and Power.  Surah Ash-Shooraa 42: 49/50

Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala, the Creator and Owner of every single creation, through His Hikmah (wisdom) and Qudrat (power), bestows offspring to whomsoever He Desires. Some are blessed with daughters, others with sons, yet some are granted none (childless). (Those that are not favoured with the boon of being granted offspring should be content with the Divine decree of Allah Ta’ala.)

Scholars have highlighted the fact that in the above verses, mention was made of ‘daughters‘ first, thus showing to us the significance of having daughters.

The Ahadeeth of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam are replete with great blessings mentioned for the one who is granted a daughter. Hence, in Islam daughters are regarded a great N’imat (bounty) and NOT considered a misfortune.

Hazrat Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri Radiallahu Anhu has narrated that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said :

“If anyone cares for (his) three daughters, inculcates in them good manners, gets them married, and is kind to them, then for him is Paradise.” [Tirmidhi]

Daughters are a blessing and not a misfortune! Take delight on the birth of a daughter!
