وَالذَّاكِرِينَ اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا وَالذَّاكِرَاتِ

… and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so ~ Surah Al Ahzaab 33:35

Making Shukr to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala

When somebody is kind to you and bestows favours upon you, then it is common courtesy that you should thank the person. When you thank the person, he becomes happy and waits for another chance to bestow some other favour upon you, because he sees that you have appreciated the gift he has given you.

Similarly, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, who is the true Bestower of favours, when we thank HIM for the innumerable favours that He has bestowed upon us, HE becomes happy.
The Quraan explains that if you show gratitude to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, He will become pleased with you, and He will increase you in the Ni’mat’s (bounties) ….

ۗ وَإِن تَشْكُرُوا يَرْضَهُ لَكُمْ

And if you are grateful, He is pleased therewith for you ~ Surah Az Zumar 39:7

and …

ۖ لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ

‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor] ~ Surah Ibraheem 14:7

These are two great benefits of making Shukr to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala :

• Allah becomes happy
• Allah will increase you in the Ni’mats He has given you

We should therefore make immense Shukr when Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala choses us to sit in gatherings of Zikr, wherein we rekindle our Imaan. We are given the Taufeeq (ability) and opportunity to take the name of Allah, or at least hear the name of Allah been taken. What a great Ni’mat (bounty) this is!

Moulana Rumi RA mentioned a story of a man who was deceived by Shaytaan. After so many years of making Zikrullah and taking the name of Allah, saying “Allah Allah Allah” … Shaytaan told him, “No response has come from Allah? Allah has not told you “Labbayk” after all this time? Did you hear any answer from Allah? “ …

The man then said : “Yes, i have been saying Allah Allah Allah and not once has Allah said Labbayk … Oh my servant I am present! What is it that you require?” … So he stopped making the Zikr of Allah … He was immediately admonished. He saw a dream in which he was shown that he had indeed been answered by Allah all the time …The fact that he was able to take the name of Allah a second time, a third time, a fourth time, a fifth time and several times after, was a clear indication that Allah had accepted the previous Zikr that he had made.

So the fact that we get Taufeeq of sitting again and again in gatherings of Zikr, is a sign (Insha`Allah) that Allah has accepted the previous gathering of  Zikr. May Allah give us the Taufeeq of making Zikr right till we leave this world.

A Hadith states :

Hazrat Abdullah Bin Bisr RA narrated that a villager came to the Holy Court of Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alaihi wa Sallam and asked, “Which man is the best?” Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alaihi wa Sallam said, “It is the good-fortune of that person whose life is long and his deeds are good.” He asked, “Ya Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alaihi wa Sallam!  Which deed is the best?” Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alaihi wa Sallam said,“Your tongue be wet with Zikr of Allah when you part from this world.” ~ Tirmidhi

Benefits and Blessings of Zikrullah

1) Zikr keeps away Shaytaan and weakens his strength. When a person takes the name of Allah, it repels Shaytaan.

2)  Zikr is the means of attaining Almighty Allah Ta’ala’s pleasure. When Shaytaan is repelled, then the Zaakir who is taking the name of Allah, pleases Allah …

3) Zikr relieves the mind from anxieties and worries. When a person that is stressed and has worries, sits in the Majlis of Zikr, he automatically feels de-stressed. All the anguish seems to disappear when he takes the name of Allah and his heart becomes stronger and happier.

4) Zikr produces joy and happiness in the heart.

5) Zikr strengthens the body and mind.

6) Zikr brightens the face and heart. When a person makes the Zikr of Allah, he strengths his heart and his face will also be brightened. A Zaakir who makes Zikr for long periods of time, besides his heart becoming illuminated, the effects of the Zikr comes onto his face and his eyes. The Zikr of Allah brings Noor on a persons face.

7) Zikr nourishes the soul. Just as food nourishes our bodies, Zikrullah nourishes our soul. A person who is not constant with the Zikr of Allah is keeping his soul in an impoverished condition. The soul, then becomes hungry and is not nourished correctly. Just as a person who suffers ill-health when he eats unhealthy food, one is not going to be a spiritually healthy person when he does not receive the appropriate spiritual nourishment.

8) Zikr involves Muraaqabah (meditation) through which one reaches the stage of Ihsaan, wherein a person worships Almighty Allah Ta’ala as if he is actually seeing Him.

9)  Zikr helps a person to turn to Allah.

10) Zikr is the key to the nearness of Almighty Allah Ta’ala. The more abundant the Zikr, the more one will get nearer to Allah Ta’ala.

Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA)narrated that  Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alaihi wa Sallam said, “Allah Tabaraka wa Ta’ala says when a person moves his lips for Zikr of Allah, I am with him.” ~ Bukhari

11) Zikr opens the doors of realization (Ma’arifat) of Allah Ta’ala.

12) Zikr of Allah Ta’ala causes one to be remembered the court of Allah Ta’ala, as the Quraan states:

فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ وَاشْكُرُوا لِي وَلَاتَكْفُرُونِ
” Remember me, and I will remember you.” (2:152)

13) Zikr cleanses the heart of its rust. It has been mentioned; everything rusts according to its nature; and to purify it, Zikr is necessary.

14) Zikr saves a person from the Azaab of Allah. It is a means of deliverance from Allah Ta’ala’s punishment.

15) Zikr causes Allah Ta’ala’s peace and mercy to descend, and the Angels surround the person engaged in Zikr.

16) Zikr will save one from despair on the Day of Judgement. This is confirmed by one of the Ahâdith which says that the gathering devoid of Allah Ta’ala’s Zikr will cause sorrow and regret on that Day.

17) Zikr causes the plants and trees of Paradise to grow.

Kayfiyat and Zikrullah

Many times we want to experience some type of Kayfiyat (feeling) when making Zikrullah. This can be dangerous sometimes, because a person may develop pride when experiencing those feelings and may then perceive himself to be very pious …

Hence the Mashaa’ikh emphasize that we should, never be concerned about Kayfiyat, as this is not the Maqsood (objective) of Zikr. The purpose of Zikr is to cleanse our hearts and bring Allah into our hearts …

If one does not feel any special type of enjoyment, one should not feel dejected or low … One should continue making the Zikr of Allah … We have heard the blessings of Zikr, and its many great benefits which brings us closer and closer to Allah Ta’ala … and that is our objective.
