And each [story] We relate to you from the news of the messengers is that by which We make firm your heart. And there has come to you, in this, the truth and an instruction and a reminder for the believers ~ Surah Hud 11:120
 …

What benefit does one derive from listening to the stories of the Auliya?

The Malfoozaat (Anecdotes) that we listen to, or read, are in fact, one of the Armies of Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala … The hearts of the Saalikeen-those treading the path of Sulook (seeking Allah), derive peace and strength from these Malfoozaat.

Provided that one is a sincere seeker of Haq (Truth), the spiritual advices of the Shaykh will take one closer to Allah. It will make one realise one’s object in this world and have a positive effect on his heart. It will instill in him the courage to refrain from sins and make him aware of the harms and consequences of sins.

“Allah Ta`ala says in the Qur`aan: “Every episode which We narrate to you from the stories of the Messengers, We strengthen therewith your heart.”

Who is a Mureed?

A Mureed in reality is one who is seeking the recognition of Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala … Allah is the “Muraad” … Allah is the object and goal we are striving to reach. We are seeking to gain His love, proximity, pleasure and recognition.

A Mureed is guided by a spiritual mentor, who becomes a means of guiding him towards Allah Subhaanahu Wa Ta’ala.

It is therefore imperative for him to ‘repeatedly’ sit in the company of his mentor and listen attentively to his discources and the anecdotes of the pious predecessors and thereby strengthen his spiritual heart.

An Explanation of Some Selected Malfoozaat of Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (RA) 6

1)  The Gist of Tassawuf

It is to annihilate oneself ie to regard oneself as totally worthless and inferior to all.

Annihilation of the Nafs (base-desires) helps cure spiritual maladies like pride, jealousy, enmity, greed and malice etc.

When one thinks nothing of oneself and is humbled, the heart becomes attached to ALLAH Rabbul Izzat.

2)  Never Laugh at or Mock others

Whoever does so … He himself becomes involved in the same problem as the person being ridiculed and will be laughed at.

3) Failure to Regret a Sin (An Azaab Punishment)

When the Wrath of ALLAH Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala is upon a person, he fails to regret his sins. As such, he does not engage in Taubah. The heart then becomes hard due to being deprived of making Taubah and the person becomes distanced from the Mercy of ALLAH Ta’aala.

4) Death with Imaan

The key to Jannah is Imaan. Thus, a person must die with Imaan… Even if it the lowest degree of Imaan, it is still a great treasure. Death with Imaan is entirely in the Hands of ALLAH Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala.

5) Reason for Weakness in Good Deeds

Love for this world and no conviction of the Aakhirat causes a deficiency in the performance of good deeds.

6)  The Effect of Dua

We should make dua for the success of our aspirations and for relief from our difficulties. It is important to be attentive when making dua.

Whether the dua is fulfilled or not,  Dua brings sukoon (peace and satisfaction) into the heart.

7) Lack of Love and Appreciation from Friends and Family

One should take comfort and be relieved that ALLAH Ta’aala has freed one’s heart from “Ghairullah”. One now realizes that only Allah is the Beloved. One gets the oppurtunity to focus his gaze only unto Allah.

8)  Ibaadat at Night

Leaving the comfort of one’s bed and turning to ALLAH late at night is extremely Pleasing to ALLAH Azza wa Jal.

9) Death on a Friday

This is extremely virtuous. Due to the Auspiciousness of Jumuah, the deceased is not questioned by the Angels and is protected against Azaab of Qabr.

وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ قَوْلًا مِّمَّن دَعَا إِلَى اللَّهِ
And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah ~ (Surah Fussilat 41:33)

Hadeeth

Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: “If the people knew what (reward) there is in the call (Adhan) and praying in the first row, and there was no other way to settle the matter than drawing lots, then they would draw lots for it”. (Bukhari and Muslim)

Hazrat Ibn ‘Umar RA narrates that Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said : The Muazzin will receive forgiveness to the extent the voice of his Adhan reaches; every living and non-living thing that hears his voice, supplicates for his forgiveness. In another narration it is stated: Every living and nonliving thing replies to his Adhan. (Musnad Ahmad, Tabarani, Bazzar, Majma’uz-Zawaid)

These, and many other Ahaadeeth point out the “Great Virtues” of calling out the Azaan and in standing in the first Saf (row) for Salaah in Jamaat.

An Explanation of Some Selected Malfoozaat of Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (RA) 5

1) ALLAH OUR PROTECTOR

ALLAH Ta’aala through HIS Infinite Mercy does not want anyone to suffer a financial loss. HE has instructed us to always record our financial transactions (especially loans) with two witnesses. Will HE then, not protect our lives in Dunya and Aakhirat?

HE will not fling us into Jahannum unless we ourselves do not attempt to enter it.

2) Benefits of Imaan and Righteous deeds

As a result of A’amaal-e-sawlehaat (righteous deeds), a person is blessed with the acceptance and love of mankind and animals. Both believers and non-Believers develop love for this person irrespective of whether they have contact with or benefit from him. This is the benefit of righteous deeds.

3) Do Not Deliberately Dwell over Past Sins

One should not excessively ponder and dwell over past sins for which one has made sincere Taubah. One should also not over concern oneself with worrying about whether it may happen again in the future, lest one may become so disillusioned by the intensity of the sin and lose Hope in the Mercy of ALLAH Ta’ala.

4) Excessive Corporal Punishment

To excessively hit ones pupils/children is oppression!
Whilst one may reprimand, it is not appropriate to beat students who may be naturally weak.

5) Prosperity a Boon

Well being and prosperity is a great boon which can assist in matters of Deen, whilst excess wealth can cause anguish and neglect.

Wealth is a N’imat (bounty) if it does not preoccupy one and its rights are fulfilled.

An Explanation of Some Selected Malfoozaat of Hazrat Moulana Ashraf Ali Thaanwi (RA) 4

1) Attaching Hope and Expectation on Another

“Do not attach any hope or expectation upon another and one will be free of anxiety and grief. This is the essence of Deen and Dunya.”

One’s hope/expectation should only be with ALLAH Ta’aala. When it is upon the Makhlooq of ALLAH, this invariably leads to grief, anxiety and depression due to disappointment.

2) Shun that which has no Worldly or Deeni Benefit

By not wasting time on futile (la ya’ni) activities, one can lead a happy and content life. The one who spends his time pursuing futile things, will not be interested in the ‘necessary’ things.

Time is an amaanat from ALLAH Ta’ala and should not be wasted in futile activities.

3) Sleep when feeling sleepy

When tired and sleepy, it is best to sleep and refresh the mind. Fighting sleep can harm the mind and lead to insanity. Rasulullah (صلي الله عليه و سلم) has also said ‘do not decrease sleep’ …. in order to function well, one requires sufficient sleep.

4)  Dua alone, is insufficient for Islaah (reformation)

In addition to dua, adopting the ways and means for Islaah is absolutely essential.

5) The Secret behind Unity

Do not burden another, even ones own brother. Try and be independent.

Always pay for an object no matter how small it may be.

Live with each other like brothers but deal/trade with one another like strangers.

6) Punishment for Disgracing the Ulema

Those who taunt/tease or insult the Ulema… Their faces will be turned away from the Qibla in the Qabr (grave).

Spend one’s time on self-reflection and introspection rather than judging and belittling others, especially the Ulema.

7) The Intention when Counting Money

One’s intention should be to ensure that no “extra” money was received from the purchaser of the item/debtor when one receives payment from him. The intention should not be to ensure that the debtor has not paid you less…
